How California Almonds Are Built for Drought Resilience

California's almond industry has invested over $100 million in drought resilience infrastructure. Here is what that means for supply continuity and buyer confidence.

How California Almonds Are Built for Drought Resilience

Drought as a Structural Reality

California's Central Valley has experienced seven drought years since 2012. Rather than treat drought as an anomaly, the almond industry has adapted its water infrastructure, varietal choices, and farming practices to operate reliably across the full range of California's climate variability.

Calmond Valley's approach to drought resilience is built on three pillars: water portfolio diversification, precision irrigation technology, and varietal selection for water-use efficiency.

Water Portfolio Diversification

We draw from a diversified water portfolio that includes surface water allocations from the State Water Project, groundwater from our permitted wells, and recycled agricultural water where available. During drought years, surface water deliveries are reduced or eliminated; our groundwater assets provide continuity of supply. We manage extraction carefully against our Groundwater Sustainability Plan to ensure long-term availability.

Precision Irrigation Technology

All Calmond Valley orchards operate on subsurface drip irrigation with soil moisture sensing. This allows us to maintain tree health and yields with significantly less applied water than conventional irrigation methods. During stress periods, we implement regulated deficit irrigation protocols that reduce water application while protecting kernel development quality.

Varietal Choices

We have selectively planted varieties with demonstrated water-use efficiency, including Nonpareil selections grafted on drought-tolerant rootstocks. New plantings use rootstocks evaluated in UC Davis and Almond Board trials for performance under reduced irrigation regimes.

Supply Continuity Commitment to Buyers

Calmond Valley has not experienced a supply disruption to contracted B2B buyers in any drought year since our founding. Our water infrastructure investment is a direct guarantee of supply reliability. We communicate proactively about seasonal water conditions and provide buyers with annual water security assessments upon request.
